The Ireland Women's Rugby team may have finished eighth at the Paris 2024 Olympics , but they've become a sensation on social media thanks to an impressive display of strength from one of their young stars .

Erin Lake, aged 20, is receiving global acclaim for her extraordinary strength during the match against Great Britain at the Stade de France.

Lake remarkably managed to hold onto her teammate Emily Lane after lifting her to catch a GB re-start. Lane flipped over in the air after catching the ball, but Lake held onto her colleague, preventing a potentially serious injury had she fallen head-first to the ground.

One Twitter user remarked: "Talk about teamwork! Literally. A true teammate carries you through everything."

Another commented: "Ireland women's sevens players Erin King and Emily Lane forgetting their earthly limitations in the Olympic match against GB."

Despite not making the quarter-finals, Ireland lost twice in the placement games, resulting in an eighth-place finish.

In other news, Irish Sevens legend Lucy Mulhall Rock has announced her retirement from the sport. The Ireland captain suffered a knee injury in the team's second pool game against South Africa.

This marks the end of her 10-year tenure with the squad, following a year marred by injuries for the Tinahely woman.

Rock was named Player of the Final when the Ireland Women made history by winning their first ever HSBC SVNS Series tournament in Perth earlier this year.

She penned on Instagram: "Sin a bhfuil. It's been the honour of my life to play for and captain the Ireland Women's Sevens team for the past 10 years, but now it's time for me to step aside and watch my amazing team-mates and friends take this team forward and on to bigger and better things."
