3 Bold Predictions For The Los Angeles Chargers In 2024

The Los Angeles Chargers have their quarterback and head coach nailed down, but seemingly little else.

For a team that won just five games a season ago, the Chargers do have a headstart most franchises in a similar position would kill for. However, there’s still plenty of work to be done, and with the NFL being an unpredictable place, anything is possible.

Here’s a look at three predictions that aren’t impossible, but are far from guaranteed.

1. JK Dobbins explodes

Taking away his injury-riddled 2021 and 2023 seasons, Dobbins averaged 5.7 yards per carry and 6.0 yards per carry in 2020 and 2022, respectively. If he can simply stay healthy, he has the potential to deliver one of the biggest surprises of the season at the position.

Of course, Dobbins’ ability to stay healthy is far from guaranteed.

However, many players with an injury history like Dobbins (see: Jimmy Garoppolo) and untapped talent often get at least one season where everything comes together. The 2024 campaign is as likely as any season for Dobbins to get his moment in the spotlight.

2. Chargers double their win total

The Chargers won five games last year. Philip Rivers has predicted his former team to win 10 games, according to LA Football Network . With Dobbins taking flight, Jim Harbaugh’s system righting several wrongs for the franchise and Justin Herbert finishing the season healthy, the Chargers get back into Wild Card contention.

While some are putting the Chargers on a Super Bowl trajectory this season, doubling one’s win total overnight is still a massive accomplishment. Several franchises who have been stuck around the five or six-win mark can only dream about such a rise. The Chargers get it done in 2024.

3. Justin Herbert gets swept by Patrick Mahomes

The Chargers are in for a quality outing this season. However, it won’t be perfect. The Chiefs, newly reloaded on offense and at punter, end up sweeping Justin Herbert in the regular season. Do they get a third crack at No. 15 via the playoffs? Who’s to say, but during the regular season, the Chargers chase Patrick Mahomes in an effort that comes up short.

Of course, for the Chargers to get to the Super Bowl, they’ll need to face Mahomes at one time or another in January. When the Rams went to the Super Bowl in 2021, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers twice that season. However, when the chips were down, the 49ers blinked first in their third head-to-head matchup.
