Athena Shares Which ’90s Movie Inspired Her Entrance At ROH Death Before Dishonor

Athena wants to be the ROH Women’s Champion for-e-ver… for-e-ver!

The self-proclaimed Forever Champion successfully defended her title against Queen Aminata at the Ring of Honor Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view. Athena had a special entrance and gear made for the event. During the Post-Show Media Scrum, she shared her inspiration behind the wrestling gear.

Athena mentioned that her intro (performed by Lexy Nair) for the pay-per-view was inspired by the 90’s hit comedy film The Sandlot . Taking it a step further, she said her post-show outfit, an oversized hat and baseball jersey, was a nod to the film’s main character, Scotty Smalls.

“This was inspired by Sandlot . If you haven’t figured it out yet, gosh! I need you guys to get your nerd culture on point. It’s a cult classic. And today in the scrum, I’m Smalls You know, ‘too big’ hat, nice custom MIT jersey, get over it.

“But, no, I had to make the mask myself, my amazing gear, Lady Tanya, made my outfit for me today. And she just nailed it. But I had to do a ‘Emergency! Make a Mask in like two days, that took me about 14 hours to do that, so that was fun, getting off a plane, finishing that. Just making sure all the final pieces are done. But, yeah, Sandlot . The Beast baby,” Athena said.

Athena: ROH is my show. It is my rules

During the same scrum, Ian Riccobani mentioned the fact that Athena is the longest-reigning ROH Women’s Champion and if this run has solidified her legacy. The ROH Women’s Champion said that it does and that she runs the division.

“Yes. Very simple answer. That’s all I’ve set out to do, was just to get the recognition that I feel like all of us strive for in the locker room. I am the best, I want everyone to try to step up, I want everyone to try to beat me. Even though they are incapable of it. This is my show. It is my show. It is my rules. This is me on a platter and everyone needs to respect it because I will punch you in the face, as tired as I am right now.”
