Former NFL QB Offers Wild Take On Jets, Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers hasn’t yet finished his first full game for the New York Jets. However, one NFL analyst believes he is on an alarming path.

Speaking on ESPN’s “First Take,” former NFL quarterback and current analyst Dan Orlovsky might have been the first analyst to open the door to a new low for the Jets and their quarterback.

Orlovsky stated that New York’s 2023 deal for Rodgers could end up being one of “the worst trades in NFL history.”

This, of course, comes on the heels of the Russell Wilson trade. Many call that trade the worst in league history. However, with Rodgers yet to show his worth for the Jets in any meaningful capacity, Orlovsky’s take might be a bit too early.

Sure, if Rodgers suffers another season-ending injury, the Jets basically wasted a high-end draft pick and two years. However, had the Jets not gotten Rodgers with the pick, they might have had a chance to get a rookie signal-caller.

Rookie quarterbacks could take up to five years to get played out. Put simply, instead of two years wasted with Rodgers, they could have spent a pick to waste five years with another rookie.

Jets’ Aaron Rodgers has the opportunity to nip the trade evaluations in the bud

First and foremost, this summer could be the first and last time such claims and topics are discussed. It will be up to Rodgers whether that is the case, however.

That said, there are a couple of other points worth pointing out in defense of Rodgers.

Orlovsky was a former Lions quarterback who played back when Rodgers did. However, Orlovsky wrapped his career earlier than he wanted. Since then, he has been forced to watch the Packers quarterback live the career he wanted. Put simply, Orlovsky has plenty of motivation to declare Rodgers’ trade worse than it was.

Still, if Rodgers were to wrap up his Jets era with no playoff appearances, analysts would see the trade as a failure. Also, two season-ending injuries would cause the same evaluation.

All things considered, elevating the Jets’ trade for Rodgers to be one of the worst in NFL history might be stretching it just a little, considering it was only one pick. The real mistake might have been not electing to train a quality rookie behind Aaron Rodgers in the process.
