Spokane housing voucher application deadline approaching

SPOKANE COUNTY - It's been eight years since people living in Spokane County could apply for a housing voucher.

The application is back open now, but that will only be the case for a few days.

For many people, a section eight housing voucher means the difference between sleeping on the streets or sleeping in a home. The voucher program supports low income families, the elderly and people who are disabled.

Spokane Housing Authority said in the last 24 hours, they received 1,700 applications.

Don't be discouraged at the large number of applications: the position a person holds on the waitlist can change quickly. The list is ordered by date and time you submit, but it's also based on factors like whether you have dependents under 18 or a head of household who is disabled or elderly.

Anyone with a need is encouraged to join the waitlist. To qualify for the housing choice voucher, a household of three can make up to $44,050 per year.

"We know that people are excited about the opportunity. Also, its an indicator to our staff that the need for housing assistance is extensive, and people are looking for solutions. And the housing choice voucher program can be one of those solutions for people," said Kelly Keenan, director of housing assistance programs at Spokane Housing Authority.

The application will close on August 5. Here's the link to apply .
