American Woman Found Chained, Abandoned to Die in Indian Jungle

A 50-year-old American woman was discovered chained to a tree and left to die in a jungle after a cattle herder heard her cries in Maharashtra on Saturday.

Lalita Kayi Kumar was rescued and rushed to a nearby hopsital in Sawantandi and police filed a case of attempted murder against her ex-husband based on a note she wrote in the hospital. According to The Independent , authorities verified her identity through copies of her US passport and a national identity card found with her. Investigators said it is unclear how long she was tied to the tree and the area experienced heavy rain at the time of her rescue. Kumar was later transfered to another medical facility for further treatment.

Her rescue went viral on social media after she was seen writing a note to police stating that her husband chained her to the tree and reportedly left her to die. In the note she writes: “Injection for extreme psychosis which caused severe locked jaw and inabiliy to drink any water. Need intravenous food later. 40 days without food in the forest, husband tied me to a tree in a forest.” Police believe her husband, whose name has not been disclosed, is from Tamil Nadu. Forest inspector Vikas Padve said Kumar is suffering from psychiatric issues and remains under observation at the hospital. It is believed that Kumar had been living in India for the past ten years and authorities have launched an investigation to find any relatives in Tamil Nadu and Goa.

“When we discovered her, she was seriously dehydrated. It appears that she was stuck there for a minimum of 48 hours. Although she was mute,” said Amol Chavan, one of the inspectors at the Sawantwadi Police Station. Authorities have been unable to recieve an official statement due to Kumar’s condition.
