Although Abi Carter continues to relish in her American Idol victory, the show continues to move forward, preparing for season 23. Renewing the show for yet another season, fans watched as season 22 marked the end for Katy Perry. Looking to return to the stage, the singer left behind Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Although Perry and even fans offered suggestions as to who should take her spot, it appears the producers decided on former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. With Underwood joining the hit show, here are all the details about the upcoming season and if Richie and Bryan will be returning.

Back in May, American Idol announced that ABC decided to renew the show for another season. Excited about a new lineup of contestants, fans were shocked when news dropped that Underwood would be the new judge. But what about Richie and Bryan? Although making some memorable moments over the seasons, Bryan discussed the whirlwind of speculation surrounding the new season. While Bryan and Richie will most likely return, the country singer explained, “We currently haven’t heard what the story is on who’s coming back, and if Lionel and I are coming back. I think Disney is just trying to figure out what they want to do and we’re just kind of sitting back and waiting until they decide.”

When Will Season 23 Of ‘American Idol’ Premiere?

With details surrounding season 23 of American Idol still being worked out, the show opened up for virtual auditions back in May. Running from May 3 to October 15, aspiring artists can submit an audition to the producers. Although having a list of requirements, it appears a singer must be a legal U.S. resident and never placed first on American Idol before. That leaves singers like Underwood out of the running.

While renewing American Idol for another season, ABC has yet to drop the official premiere date for season 23. Although having little details, the history of the show might have clues. For seasons 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22, they all started in February. Appearing to like that time of year, fans should expect the new season around the same time. But no matter what, a new season of American Idol, featuring Underwood, kicks off in 2025.
