The New York Jets welcomed back one cornerback from injury while losing another on the same day.

Backup cornerback, and core special teamer, Brandin Echols returned as to practice on Wednesday in Florham Park. He sustained a ribs injury during Saturday's padless session.

"He's got kind of like a contusion in his ribs. We will reevaluate Monday, but we're not concerned with regard to long-term," said Jets head coach Robert Saleh after Echols left practice.

As it turns out, the head coach's estimation was on point as Echols missed only two padded practices before returning.

Meanwhile, starting slot cornerback Michael Carter II went down after apparently colliding with a teammate during team drills on Wednesday.

Sounding much like he did after Echols's injury, Saleh spoke optimistically about Carter following practice.

"He is dealing with an ankle. Shouldn't be a long-term deal, but I'll have a better answer for you guys next time I see you," said Saleh.

The Jets have no media availability on Thursday with practice resuming on Friday.

Carter, a 2021 Day 3 draft pick, enters his contract year following back-to-back highly-productive seasons. Pro Football Focus , which uses analytics-based grading, ranked the New York slot starter as the NFL's No. 9 overall cornerback heading into 2024.
