( NewsNation ) — A former New Hampshire attorney has been arrested on allegations he stole from a former client who had recently suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Justin Nadeau, 51, has been charged with theft by deception, forgery, multiple counts of falsifying physical evidence and financial exploitation of an elderly, disabled, or impaired adult, according to New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella.

The affidavit alleges that Nadeau induced two loans from his now-former client totaling $281,500 under false pretenses. He then, according to the attorney general, worked to hide his misconduct from the New Hampshire Attorney Discipline Office, including by altering electronic files and submitting false documents.

Nadeau is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 9 at the Rockingham County Circuit Court in Portsmouth.

The Portsmouth Herald reports that Nadeau ran for U.S. Congress 20 years ago.
