Incumbent Republican state Rep. John Gillespie will face Democrat Jesse Huseth in the general election race for Tennessee House District 97 in November.

Gillespie dominated Thursday night's Republican primary, receiving more than 90% of the vote.

He is now seeking his third term in the seat and has continued to emphasize public safety and crime reduction as his primary focus.

Gillespie defeated Christina Oppenhuizen in the primary, a candidate with limited experience who said her focus would be on making "officials in position(s) of power be accountable for corruption." She also said she would focus on curbing crime and ensuring tax dollars went to boosting the local economy.

Huseth, who was the lone Democrat in the race this year, will be Gillespie's opponent come November. Huseth has a background as a teacher, saying education has been key to his platform. He strongly opposes school vouchers and wants to see an increased emphasis, and spending, on trade and technical programs.

Huseth has also voiced support for securing a local crime lab, and state funding for the construction of that crime lab.
