The New York Jets are not done trying to improve the offensive structure around quarterback Aaron Rodgers . On Thursday, NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported that the Jets tried out a group of players, and it included veteran wide receiver and former Pro Bowler Jarvis Landry.

The Jets ended up signing cornerback Tre Swilling, who went undrafted in 2022 and has played for the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, and Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens had waived him on July 22, making him available in free agency.

The team also signed two former UFL wide receivers — Isaiah Winstead, who played for the Arlington Renegades, and Brandon Smith, of the DC Defenders.

    Big-name option

Jarvis Landry is far removed from his prime. A second-round pick in 2014, he had strong seasons for the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns. However, his last 1,000-yard season was in 2019, and his last mildly productive year was 2021, when he had 52 receptions for 570 yards with the Browns.

In 2022, he played only nine games and finished the season with 25 receptions for 272 yards in his lone year for the New Orleans Saints. Landry wasn't signed by any team in 2023. Earlier this year, he participated in the Jacksonville Jaguars' rookie minicamp on a workout basis, eyeing a return to the NFL.

    Depth

The New York Jets have their big receiving star in Garrett Wilson, but beyond that there is still space for more production. The team signed Mike Williams in free agency after his release from the Los Angeles Chargers, but he has to stay healthy, and veteran addition from last year Allen Lazard wasn't productive in 2023 — there is a realistic expectation that he will play better with Aaron Rodgers. General manager Joe Douglas drafted Malachi Corley in the third round.

The Jets' roster also has Xavier Gipson, Malik Taylor, Jason Brownlee, Irvin Charles, Hamze El-Zayat, Tyler Harrell, and Lance McCutcheon. While there are developmental pieces, there would certainly be space for a more established piece.

    Wide receiver market

There are still intriguing options in free agency at the wide receiver position. Besides Jarvis Landry, the available names include Hunter Renfrow, Michael Thomas (with whom Landry played in New Orleans) , and Russell Gage.
