Is your NY hospital among best, worst? Check list of latest federal quality ratings

A total of 34 hospitals in New York received the lowest overall rating in the latest federal government review of safety and quality measures, as the state's health system continued to rank poorly nationally .

The new federal ratings released this week show about 26% of the 133 hospitals reviewed in New York got the lowest one-star ratings. That is well above the national level at 10% of hospitals getting that subpar rating, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis of the federal ratings data.

At the same time, only 10 hospitals in New York received the highest five-star rating, reflecting about 8% of the total hospitals reviewed. The national level for these top-performing hospitals was about 13%.

The five-star rating system — which involves reviewing patient death rates, medical safety measures, patient readmission rates, patient experience surveys, and timely and effective care — is based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, analysis of medical data.

What goes into the national hospital safety rankings?

New York has historically had some of the worst rankings for hospital quality and safety in the country, despite spending more than other states on health care.

Earlier this year, New York state overall ranked 39th worst in the country in terms of hospital safety, according to Leapfrog's latest spring grades .

Hospital trade groups, however, have disputed many of the rankings, citing a lack of uniform standards as well as varying timeframes for data reviews that failed to account for the complexities of health care delivery.

While the differences between rankings are connected to the scoring measures used, experts say patients should try to be aware of the results in each respective system because they focus on a variety of important issues.

    NY's hospital quality ratings

Many of the hospitals across the Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley saw their overall quality ratings improve or drop since CMS last released the ratings in 2023. A total of 58 hospitals statewide weren't rated in the 2024 review, which excluded facilities based on several reasons, including a lack of sufficient data reported to regulators.
