Liverpool gets answer on Marc Guehi transfer as Premier League rival swoops in

Newcastle United has entered into discussions to sign Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi .

The 24-year-old was arguably England's best player at Euro 2024, shining for the Three Lions in the absence of Manchester United's Harry Maguire, who missed the tournament in Germany due to injury. Guehi has two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park and has attracted interest from across Europe following his stellar performances this summer.

Liverpool was credited with interest in Guehi previously, but a move for the Palace ace looks to have gone off the boil . And now it seems Newcastle is leading the charge for the Palace defender's signature as they look to challenge for Champions League football once again this term.

The Athletic report the Magpies are in talks with Palace to sign Guehi. They claim the Palace star is high up on the list of a number of "Europe's biggest clubs" but that Newcastle are the first team to begin official talks to sign Guehi.

Should the Magpies sign Guehi this summer, it will be a significant coup. Newcastle is keen on both raising the floor of its squad and finding a long-term successor to Fabian Schar. The Swiss international turns 33 later this season and with Sven Botman set to be out until late 2024 following knee surgery, signing defensive depth was a priority for them during the transfer window.

Newcastle has already brought in Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth on a free transfer and is now looking at making a bumper move for Guehi, who will cost the team around $76 million (£60m/€70m). And it now looks as though Palace is prepared to lose Guehi this summer, with the Eagles having already signed a center-back from Real Betis in the form of Chadi Riad for $15 million (£12m/€14m).

Previously, the England international has spoken warmly about St James' Park too. "I would say in the Prem, probably Newcastle. St James' Park," Guehi said when asked about the best ground he had played at in the Premier League bar Selhurst Park whilst away on England duty.

"It's just really loud in there, their fans make it really difficult when you go there so probably St James' Park."

Liverpool.com says: What a signing Marc Guehi would be for Newcastle United. The Palace defender impressed for England throughout the European Championships and looks to be a main stay at the back for the Three Lions for years to come.

Newcastle already has three left-footed center-backs in the form of Dan Burn, Lloyd Kelly and the currently injured Sven Botman, which means bringing in a compliment on the other side to compete with Fabian Schar was a priority for the Magpies this summer. Guehi would be an incredible signing.
