USMNT knocked out of Olympics after being thumped by Morocco in Paris

The United States unceremoniously crashed out of the Olympic men's soccer quarterfinals on Friday in a 4-0 drubbing against Morocco.

While the Olympic rosters are largely comprised of players 23 years old and younger, it was a disastrous afternoon for veteran center-back pairing Miles Robinson and Walker Zimmerman, with Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi getting in on the goal parade.

The Moroccans relied on abject fortune for their opening 29th-minute goal as American defender Nathan Harriel was whistled for a controversial penalty while attempting a clearance. Soufiane Rahimi coolly capitalized on his spot-kick opportunity, rolling his effort into the bottom corner to give The Atlas Lions a 1-0 edge.

After doling out 61 minutes of torture to American left-back John Tolkin, Moroccan winger Ilias Akhomach continued his dazzling afternoon with a sliding front-post finish that doubled the Africans' advantage.

Hakimi showed off his blistering speed at the world's oldest running competition shortly thereafter, winning possession in midfield and running at the American backline before sneaking a scuffed shot inside Patrick Schulte's near post. From his familiar Parc de Princes, the PSG star passed on a brace and offered his penalty try to Mehdi Maouhoub in stoppage time, who converted Morocco's second from the spot and iced a 4-0 win.

The American performance was just as disappointing as the final score would suggest, decisively deficient in possession and able to log just one shot on target through 90 minutes. Olympic rosters allow just three players over 23 years old — Djordje Mihailovic joins Zimmerman and Robinson to meet this threshold — amounting to a disappointing showcase for America's young talent, which had previously flashed promise after qualifying for its first Olympics since 2008.

This summer's squad in Paris included several players who have made high-profile European moves despite their young age, including Venezia FC's Tanner Tessman, FC Utrecht's Paxten Aaronson and VFL Wolfsburg's Kevin Parades. Chelsea starlet Caleb Wiley also made an appearance in the 80th minute.

Friday's defeat culminated a poor summer for United States men's soccer after the senior squad suffered a shock group-stage exit from Copa America on home soil last month. Gregg Berhalter was fired on July 10 and U-23 boss Marko Mitrovic, who was largely commended for advancing the Americans out of the group stage in Paris, drew criticism for tactical stubbornness against Morocco.

Morocco, meanwhile, secured a second high-profile victory of the summer after defeating Argentina 2-1, a bizarre affair that saw La Albiceleste's deep stoppage-time winner ruled out for offsides nearly an hour after the incident. The North Africans will advance to the semifinals on Monday against the winner of Japan and Spain.

American soccer fans can still enjoy the women's national team in Paris, who topped their group with a perfect nine points, including wins over Australia and Germany. The USWNT's quarterfinal match against Japan kicks off at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday.
