Sure, it's sweet when two kitties are best buds or when a dog decides another dog is going to be their girlfriend or boyfriend, but what I really love are unlikely friends. Two animals who belong to different species and may have never crossed paths under different circumstances, but once they have, they actually do get along. It always makes for some seriously adorable social media content... and I get to live vicariously through the people who are lucky enough to have witnessed the cuteness with their own eyes.
The perfect example of one of those times comes in this TikTok video. I never would have pegged a puppy and a mini horse as two animals who would coexist so peacefully, but here's the proof that it can happen!
On Wednesday, July 31, @richard_therescuedwarfmini shared this sweet update of what happened when a sweet Golden Retriever puppy named Johnny Bovine came face to face with a rescue dwarf mini horse named Richard to enjoy a lunch date together.
They were both totally chill sharing a space on the farm — not exactly behavior you'd expect from a dog who gets to meet a horse, especially a puppy with all the energy in the world. It's almost like they shared an unspoken understanding; "don't touch my hay and I won't kick you."
In the video clips and photos, we can see them calmly checking each other out, with Richard doing a bit of extra sniffing to figure out what kind of animal Johnny might be. But ultimately? They were just hanging out, like this was totally no big deal to either of them.
Their mom must be so proud!
More About Richard the Dwarf Mini Horse
Richard (and Johnny, for that matter) lives at Coco's Heart Dog Rescue, which means he's spending his life around people who love animals — and I'm willing to bet that Richard has plenty of dog friends already, not just this one!
According to an earlier video that was posted in July, Richard is a 115 pound horse with special needs who has had a lot of ups and downs since his hip was shattered after he was kicked by another pony.
"Richard received a surgery common on small animals, rare to impossible on large animals. Day to day, he moved mountains," his mom wrote in the caption. "Euthanasia wasn't the only option and after several weeks of recovery at an equine hospital, Richard has come home to what is now known as 'Richard's Place.'"
At one point, veterinarians believed that Richard would never walk again, but he's continued to defy the odds and seems to be getting stronger every day.
Good boy, Richard! It's amazing what he's been able to accomplish so far, and now he's got a new BFF to cheer him on, too.
