You know…there are worse things that have been done.

Everyone is announcing their jump into country music, like Beyonce and Lana Del Rey, Post Malone, and I must admit, when I saw MGK on the Spotify House bill for CMA Fest, he was the last one I imagined joining the country music movement. The rapper turned punk rock singer has become great friends with Jelly Roll (and even supported him at a recent Grand Ole Opry show).

MGK threw us the biggest curveball, pulling out a hit from The Dixie Chicks, n0w know as just The Chicks, “There’s Your Trouble.” The single was released in 1998 from the Dixie Chicks’ debut album Wide Open Spaces and was frankly the last thing the collective thought he would pull out of his back pocket.

MGK shared the video saying that his dad used to play the Wide Open Spaces record all the time:

“My dad used to play this Dixie Chicks album 24/7. Fun tribute to him and to great song writing. Thanks Nashville.”

We didn’t hate it then, and we don’t hate it now, as today, he released the cover for streaming platforms as a “Spotify Session.” The single’s release today was seemingly recorded live from the Spotify House concert, and polished up a little. You can tell that his voice has a little touch-up on it, but overall… I’m still not hating it.

Kelly typically sings in a lower vocal range, so it’s fun to hear him step outside of his comfort zone for this one, and he does his best to put a little twang on his voice—a true commitment to the country music bit.

So, is this a cover that everyone should listen to? No, I don’t think this is a cover of the genre necessarily needed by any means. However, he does a solid job, and I am sure The Chicks would dig it if it came across their desk.

I also love that he chose something that is not widely covered these days because we’d be beating a dead horse if he dropped a cover of “Tennessee Whiskey” or “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” Not that those aren’t great songs, but it’s refreshing to see him pulling one from outside the box.

While I personally believe not everyone needs to make the jump to country music just because it’s having a moment in the limelight, I do believe that it’s cool to see artists push themselves out of their comfort zones, especially when a song like this has a special meaning for MGK.
