Honda thinks EVs are too “thick” and “heavy,” and is looking to change that with the Honda Zero division.

The automaker even developed a separate logo for upcoming models , to separate the EVs from gas and hybrid cars.

The first vehicle under the developing division is the Saloon.

Honda described the Saloon with three words: thin, light, and wise, according to The Verge .

These were the three principles used by the automaker as a guide when creating the EV series.

The division also looks to develop a “boxier” van-type of vehicle down the line soon after the Saloon called the Space-Hub.

The Saloon has a sloping fastback shape with rectangular headlights – a unique vehicle feature.

It rides very close to the ground drawing inspiration from Formula 1 racing along with a minimal interior.

The Space-Hub looks similar to a minivan with small overhangs and a massive panoramic moonroof that curves on the side, creating a greenhouse-like effect.

The interior has two bench seats facing each other, suggesting that autonomous shuttle service could become a possibility in the future .

There’s no rear window, meaning that drivers will have to rely on cameras to see out the back.

No real specs have been released, however, Honda says the EVs will be both partially and fully autonomous.

A marketing video showed a retractable steering wheel that comes from the dashboard when needed.

This suggests that drivers will be able to switch from human and robot driving depending on the situation.

The concepts hope to demonstrate Honda ‘s approach to EV development showcasing a thin vehicle architecture with a low floor to accentuate aerodynamics.

It’s unclear how Honda plans to achieve a weightless aesthetic in its generation of EVs as many on the market are heavy SUVs and trucks.

    What is the Honda Saloon?

The Honda Saloon is an upcoming electric vehicle that expected to hit the North American market within the next two years.

The price of the Saloon is expected to start at around $50,000, however, Honda has yet to confirm a price.

At the time of writing, Honda hasn’t released any information regarding the specs of the Saloon.

However, the vehicle is expected to be extra aerodynamic for maximum efficiency.

It will be the first in the Honda Zero Series, which is expected to feature high-density batteries to minimize degradation.

However, the automaker has pushed for an emphasis on smaller and slimmer cars .

Honda has also partnered with Sony to develop the Afeela electric car, which will be available in the North American market by 2026.

Despite the plans for Honda’s new lineup, the automaker has faced several setbacks such as canceling a line of affordable EVs with General Motors .

Cruise, GM’s autonomous unit in which Honda was an investor of, paused all public operations after a pedestrian was injured by one of the company’s driverless cars .

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Honda for comment.
