Austin Ekeler took a major step back last season from what we have been used to seeing from the RB. He suffered a high-ankle sprain early on the season and from there on never looked like he was truly 100% healthy. That being said, he still had 5 weeks throughout the season where finished with the top 10 RBs in full PPR leagues.
His ability to help in the passing game still stands strong as he brought in 51 receptions for 436 yards with an injured Justin Herbert playing at QB. His running efficiency is the main factor that dropped off, having a career low in yards per carry (3.5). He also did not get the chance to score as many touchdowns as he had in 2022 and 2023 (20 and 18) as he only finished the season with 6.
This offseason Ekeler signed a two year deal with the Commanders and will now be competing with Brian Robinson for play time. Robinson is a better power running back and this could once again limit the amount of TD opportunities that Ekeler will receive. Robinson also has proven his receiving talent which could keep Ekeler out of more passing plays then we are used to seeing.
He definitely still possesses the ability to have weeks where he can throw up big numbers, but the situation he’s in might not allow him to ever be the elite RB he once was. Ekeler should be taken as a RB 3 this season but if drafting him you should have another option to start over him if needed.
Our consensus projections for Ekeler in the 2024 season are 126 carries for 568 yards and 5 touchdowns. In the receiving game, his consensus projection is 39 receptions for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns.
