With the Olympic Games in full swing, we have been embracing the unexpected in the form of athletic upsets and victories. One athlete that has continued to impress us with her skill and speed is none other than Team USA's Katie Ledecky, a decorated swimmer who recently won her 13th medal, setting an all-time female record. But when she's not in the pool, what does her home look like?

The athlete blends traditional elements with surprising ones. In a post shared to her Instagram page, the Washington, D.C.-born medalist is seen sitting on her front porch , which features an exposed-brick exterior and white door – while Ledecky herself is perched at a piano. While unexpected, it certainly makes a statement.

Brick has long been a common foundation for family homes, and we have even seen it enter the interior of houses as a rustic touch. Although it is definitely a historical trend, experts say that its durability makes it a solid choice for a home's facade.

'Exposed brick has long been a cherished architectural feature, gracing the exteriors of homes with its timeless elegance and rugged charm,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein . 'As a design element, it transcends trends, offering a classic look that enhances both historical and contemporary homes.'

For those looking for more antique-inspired or classic home detailings, Lichtenstein says that brick is the ultimate choice, as well as highly adaptable.

'Exposed brick exudes a sense of history and permanence, making it a beloved choice for homeowners who appreciate traditional aesthetics,' she states. 'Whether your home is a vintage Victorian, a rustic farmhouse, or a sleek modern build, brick adds authenticity and timelessness that few other materials can match.'

One of the other appeals of brick is that it naturally features interesting textural details, with no one brick looking exactly the same.

'Brick provides an unmatched textural quality, adding depth and dimension to a home's exterior,' Lichtenstein explains. 'Its irregularities and imperfections are part of its charm, creating a visually interesting surface that catches light and shadow in captivating ways.'

However, one consideration to be mindful of is the care and maintenance of brick. Much like any other home fixture, it is crucial to pay close attention to any signs of wear or imperfections.

'Conduct regular inspections of your brick exterior to identify any signs of wear and tear. Look for cracks, loose bricks, or deteriorating mortar,' Lichtenstein suggests. 'Early detection can prevent more serious damage and costly repairs down the line.'

She continues, 'Over time, dirt, moss, and algae can accumulate on brick surfaces. Gentle cleaning with a soft brush and water is usually sufficient. For more stubborn stains, a mixture of water and mild detergent can be used. Avoid harsh chemicals and high-pressure washing, as these can damage the brick and mortar.'

Modern and elegant, this lamp would look fantastic juxtaposed in front of exposed brick.

We recommend pairing exposed brick with black or white details, like Ledecky's white doors. They add contrast and visual interest against the rusted colors of traditional brick, as well as bringing in a more modern feel.
