New England Patriots first-round star Drake Maye 'struggling' in quarterback battle with rookie

Drake Maye has reportedly had continuous struggles with the New England Patriots throughout training camp, with fellow rookie Joe Milton said to be outshining him in recent days.

The Patriots spent the third overall draft pick on Maye after being enamored by his play at North Carolina over the past two seasons, with the vision for him to become the stater from his first season. But so far, that is looking unlikely to be the case.

While New England also signed journeyman Jacoby Brissett , a player who has been with the Patriots in the past and knows the offensive system, Maye had initially been competing for the starting role - before struggling in consecutive showings this week - with Milton reported to have impressed.

A sixth-round rookie from Tennessee, Milton had been seen as an exciting prospect with arguably the most arm talent in the entire draft - but had struggled with accuracy and consistency throughout his final year as well as in the pre-draft process.

But so far, Milton is said to have ironed out some of the flaws to his game, with multiple reporters at the Patriots training camp making the suggestion that he has outplayed Maye.

Taken with a late-round pick as a flier, Milton's selection had raised some eyebrows around New England, after the team had drafted Maye with the third overall pick while having Brissett and Bailey Zappe on the roster.

In recent practices, Milton has been given more opportunities than Zappe , who started games in both 2022 and 2023, with the rookie looking to be in line to make the roster.

And should that be the case, the former Tennessee star will look to continue to impress - potentially putting pressure on Maye if he does struggle.

Milton and Maye look to be in a similar situation as Zappe and Mac Jones had been in, when the Pats selected Jones in the first and Zappe in the latter rounds - being in a battle to become the starter with fans eager to see each of the quarterbacks.

Both Maye and Milton will see considerable time playing in preseason, with each of the four quarterbacks looking to earn the starting spot - with one likely to find themselves being cut from the roster.
