If there’s anything we know about Kentucky Women’s Basketball alum Rhyne Howard, it’s that she knows how to come in clutch. It should come as no surprise that Howard’s performance in Friday’s Olympic game against Canada was history-making.
Howard, a vital part of Team USA’s Women’s Basketball 3×3 team in Paris, drained a last-second bucket in overtime to propel her squad past Canada . After an 0-3 start, Friday’s 18-17 victory was the team’s second win in a 2-0 day, and of course, the former Wildcat went off.
Kentucky fans are used to this by now. As a Wildcat, Howard was consistently coming in clutch when her team needed it most. Remember when Kentucky won the 2022 SEC Championship? In Kentucky’s four games at the tournament, Howard scored 88 points and earned tournament MVP. Soon after, the Atlanta Dream selected Howard as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft.
Howard shined at the college level, professional level, and now at the international level. It’s no surprise that the former ‘Cat found her groove on the court in Paris, especially given that her teammates are WNBA superstars. The two wins from USA’s 3×3 team Friday were much needed, pushing the overall record to 3-3. Fortunately, Team USA still has a chance at the gold. As of right now, the squad is fourth overall, tied with Canada at three wins. Just ahead of USA is Australia and Spain, tied at 4-2, and in first is Germany sitting at 5-1.
Team USA previously lost to Germany on July 30, 17-14, but might have a redemption opportunity in a couple of days, depending on how the standings roll out. Rhyne Howard and Team USA are back in action on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. EST , with play-in games to follow. Then, the squad has a chance to stand on the podium after the semifinals and medal games on Monday, Aug. 5.
