Team USA sprinting star Sha'Carri Richardson was preparing for a highly-anticipated showdown with two-time gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, of Jamaica, in their semi-final heat of the 100m at the 2024 Summer Olympics on Saturday.

The only problem was that Fraser-Pryce didn't show up.

Just minutes before the race took place, it was announced that Fraser-Price was a late scratch from the heat, and would not be running. This was a shocking decision, with very little information as to why the five-time Olympian was pulling out of the race.

Fraser-Pryce had announced that this was her final Olympics, making this withdrawal even more surprising.

Without Fraser-Price in the field, Richardson went on to finish second in the race with a final time of 10.89. St. Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred won the heat in 10.84 seconds.

Once the announcement was made about Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, fans on social media reacted with concern as to why she had to pull out.

Fraser-Pryce is a three-time gold medalist, with four silver medals and one bronze medal to her name as well. We will continue to watch on and try to find out what led to her late scratch from the race.
