SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Many people consider popular baby names, including scientists, who have studied what influences parents in naming their perfect bundles of joy. However, what about popular last names?

A new study by Ancestry.com has determined the most popular last names in every state, including Georgia.

The company found one name to be the most common, so much so, it was among the top three last names in America, excluding California, Hawaii, Minnesota, New Mexico and North Dakota.

Which means, Georgia, along with many other states share the most popular last name, Smith.

Smith was an occupational name, meaning a worker who specialized in metal like a blacksmith or farrier, per its English and Scottish roots, Ancestry explains.

Metalworking was one of the earliest occupations for which specialist skills were required and its importance ensured that this term and its equivalents in other languages were the most widespread of all occupational last names in Europe.

In Georgia, a blacksmith was an important tradesman in local communities. During a time when manufactured metal goods were expensive or unavailable, blacksmiths fashioned handmade metal objects, such as hinges and nails, customized premade horseshoe blanks and sharpened and repaired implements used in businesses and farms.
