Alex Rodriguez Said He and Jennifer Lopez Were ‘Very Much Twins’

Jennifer Lopez said she and Alex Rodriguez understood each other on a deep level. The couple shared what they had in common.

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez nearly married. After several years together, they called off their engagement, though both said they wanted to remain friends following their split. They had a solid friendship while they were together and neither wanted to give this up. Rodriguez said he and Lopez had so much in common that they were almost like twins.

Rodriguez and Lopez reconnected in 2017, years after meeting for the first time. During their first date, they talked openly with one another. Through their conversations, they discovered how much they had in common.

“We are very much twins,” Rodriguez told Vanity Fair. “We’re both Leos; we’re both from New York; we’re both Latino and about 20 other things.”

Lopez said that because of their upbringings and separate journeys to success, they understood each other in a way few other people could.

“I understand him in a way that I don’t think anyone else could, and he understands me in a way that no one else could ever,” she said. “In his 20s, he came into big success with the biggest baseball contract [at the time]. I had a No. 1 movie and a No. 1 album and made history. We both had ups and downs and challenges in our 30s, and by our 40s we’d both been through so much. And more importantly than anything, we had both done a lot of work on ourselves.”

Early in her relationship with Rodriguez, Lopez said she was very content with where she was in life. Her friends also noticed how happy the relationship made her. Leah Remini, who has been Lopez’s close friend for years, said she seemed uniquely happy with the former baseball player.

“She’s ecstatically happy, and the family meld that’s happening, Max with his girls [Emme and Rodriguez’s daughters, Natasha, 14, and Ella, 10], the whole thing is amazing,” Remini told Harper’s Bazaar.

Lopez accepted Rodriguez’s proposal in 2019.

In 2021, Lopez and Rodriguez ended their relationship. Not long after, Lopez had a highly publicized reunion with Ben Affleck, to whom she was engaged in 2003. While neither Lopez nor Affleck have spoken publicly about their marriage, it appears that they are headed toward divorce. According to some sources, Lopez might consider returning to a relationship with Rodriguez.

“[She’s] even starting to miss what she had with him,” a source told In Touch Weekly, adding, “He’s got a girlfriend now, but J. Lo doesn’t intend to stay single long, and she and A-Rod do have unfinished business.”

According to the source, the split devastated Rodriguez, and friends hope they could reunite.

“For all his faults they did have an intense connection, he was devastated when they split up,” the source said. “He insists he’s happier now without her but they have a lot of mutual friends that aren’t so convinced and he’s not married or engaged, so at this point it’s not beyond the realm that they could reconnect.”
