Premier League clubs have been buying and selling players in 2024 – but which team has spent the most and who has made a profit?

The January transfer window was surprisingly quiet and English top-flight clubs spent just €121.32million, which is the lowest spend in a non-Covid season since January 2012.

But normal business has been resumed in the summer transfer window and there’s still time for clubs to make more signings.

We’ve ranked the 20 current Premier League clubs by their transfer net spend in 2024. Note: The list also stipulates deals on an initial fee basis, not those with add-ons taken into account.

20. Everton – €32.95m profit

Biggest sale of 2024: Amadou Onana (€59.35m)

Having been charged for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR), Everton have had to sell some players in 2024.

They sold Onana and Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa for a combined €71.15million, while Ben Godfrey joined Napoli in a €12million deal.

Sean Dyche has still been allowed to bolster his squad, signing O’Brien from Lyon for €19.5million and Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille for €18million.

Tim Iroegbunam has also arrived from Aston Villa in a €10.7million deal and Jesper Lindstrom joined the club on a season-long loan deal.

Fulham have spent an initial €31.8million to sign Smith Rowe from Arsenal, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

The Cottagers were able to finance the transfer by selling Palhinha to Bayern Munich in a deal worth an initial €51million and another €5million in potential add-ons.

16. Wolves – €14.5m profit

Despite being linked with a lot of players, Liverpool are the only Premier League club yet to make a first-team signing in 2024.

“The standards are really high when it comes to bringing in new players because we have such a good team and such a good squad,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot said.

“Of course, Richard [Hughes, the sporting director] and me and other people as well are trying to improve the squad where possible, but that’s not that easy because we have so many good players.”

They’ve also not made any money through sales, although Adrian, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara have all left on free transfers.

Chelsea’s spending under the stewardship of Todd Boehly has been well-documented and they finished top of this ranking in 2023.

They’ve spent another €112.5million in 2024 and have added Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jorgensen, Omari Kellyman, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley and Marc Guiu to their squad.

But the Blues have recouped a lot of money by selling young players like Maatsen, who has joined Aston Villa in a €44.5million deal.

Newcastle United also triggered their option to buy Lewis Hall for €33million and Ipswich Town spent €23.5million to turn Omari Hutchinson’s loan deal into a permanent move.

Having finished as Premier League runners-up in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, Arsenal will be hoping to overthrow Manchester City in 2024/25 and they have made two first-team signings.

They fought off competition from Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea to sign Calafiori from Bologna in a €45million deal.

The Gunners also spent €31.9million to turn David Raya’s loan move into a permanent deal after the goalkeeper won the Premier League Golden Glove last season.

Smith Rowe was sold to Fulham in a €31.8million deal, and he is Arsenal’s biggest sale since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool for €38million in 2017.

5. Manchester United – €59m

United handed Erik ten Hag a new contract after their FA Cup final win and they are backing the manager in the transfer window.

They gave Lille an initial €62million and another €8million in add-ons for Yoro, making him the most expensive Premier League signing in 2024.

United also signed Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in a €42.5million deal and they are now working on deals for Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

Greenwood moved to Marseille in a €26million deal, while Donny van de Beek, Willy Kambwala and Alvaro Fernadez have also been sold.

4. Tottenham – €60.95m

Since winning promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 season, Ipswich Town have spent a lot of money to bolster their squad.

They broke their transfer record to turn Hutchinson’s loan deal into a permanent move, paying Chelsea a reported €23.5million.

Kieran McKenna’s side have also bought Jacob Greaves from Hull City, Liam Delap from Manchester City, Arijanet Muric from Burnley and Conor Townsend from West Brom.

1. Brighton – €96.06m

Brighton are currently the biggest-spending Premier League side in 2024 as they have an overall net spend of €96.06million.

They bought Minteh from Newcastle United in a €35million deal, making the 20-year-old the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

The Seagulls have also spent another €30million on Mats Wieffer, €19.5million on Ibrahim Osman and €7million on Malick Junior Yalcouye.

Brighton agreed to sell Gross to Borussia Dortmund for €7million after the midfielder expressed a desire to play for his boyhood club.
