What is on Jordan Chiles’ back? Explaining the spine tattoo (not a scar) visible during 2024 Olympics

Plenty of the USA's gymnasts competing at the 2024 Olympics have tattoos, but few have ones more noticeable than Jordan Chiles.

Chiles — a two-time Olympian who has won silver and gold in the team competition — has at least a dozen tattoos on her arms and back, but the latter is more visible during her competitions in Paris.

Here's what to know about Chiles' tattoos, as she and Team USA try to go for gold at the 2024 Olympics.

What is on Jordan Chiles’ back?

Chiles has numerous tattoos including one located at the top of her spine. While some initially believed it was a scar, it's actually a depiction of two koi fish swimming.

The tattoo will sometimes peak through the top of Chiles' leotard during competition, so gymnastics fans may catch a glimpse of it during the 2024 Olympics.

    Jordan Chiles' back tattoo, explained

Chiles has several back tattoos, but the one on her spine is the most notable. It depicts two koi fish swimming in a circle. They depict yin and yang — a concept that emerged in Chinese philosophy and is representative of peace, harmony, and balance.

Chiles also has a couple of quotes tattooed on her back. Those won't necessarily be noticeable when she's in her competition garb, but they have a deeper meaning to her.

One of the quotes reads, "You have struggled… and have overcome." The other is a Bible verse from Corinthians that says, "My grace is sufficient for you."

    Jordan Chiles' other tattoos

Chiles has plenty of other tattoos adorning her. She has some on her arms, including one of the Olympic rings that she shares with Simone Biles and Suni Lee, her teammates at the 2021 and 2024 Olympics.

Also among Chiles' collection of tattoos:

    • A rose on her left arm.
    • The number 23 — a reference to her namesake, Michael Jordan.
    • A quote that reads, "Where you are, I have been. Where I am, you will be"; it is a tribute to her grandfather, who died in 2023.
    • A "Golden" tattoo she got after the 2021 Olympics.
    • The angel number 444, which "conveys a powerful message of love, support, and guidance."
    • A snake
    • A flower
    • A bow
    • Three butterflies
    • The phrase "Little Sunshine."

It will be interesting to see what — if anything — Chiles adds to her body art following Team USA's gold medal at the 2024 Olympics.
