The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Brock Bowers in the 2024 NFL Draft when they found out that Michael Penix, or any quarterback worth drafting high, wasn't going to be available at pick No. 13. But, just because they went a different direction in the draft doesn't mean it was a bad pick.
In 2023, the Raiders had an awful offense -- one of the worst in the league. So, why not take the best offensive player, or maybe even the best overall player in the entire draft, to help improve that side of the ball?
Sure, the defense still needed some work, but Bowers is seen as a guy that you just cannot pass on unless you get a top QB, and yet several teams did.
The Raiders will be the team looking back laughing at it all. So far, they may already be doing that during training camp. I won't sit here and tell you their offense is fixed because it isn't but it's certainly better than it was prior, and Bowers is contributing already.
He's already made some players on the defense look silly with some amazing catches , and now he is showing that he has the perfect skill set to play in new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy's scheme. He's having a stellar first camp.
To play in this scheme, one that is going to use a lot of 12 personnel, or two tight end sets, the tight ends will need to be great blockers. Bowers is showing that he can do that at training camp already.
Of course, this play is at practice and not against your Maxx Crosby's or T.J. Watt's of the world, but he has really good technique and physical tools during his blocks. He knows how to block, and did it a ton at Georgia.
I fully expect him to be a pretty good blocker at the next level almost right away.
