United States sprinter Noah Lyles has finally secured his first Olympic gold medal, notching the honorable award in the 100-meter final on Sunday.

Lyles finished the race with 9.784 seconds, defeating the silver medal winner, Jamaica’s Kishsane Thompson, by five-thousandths of a second.

Following his narrow victory, Lyles was asked about his nickname "World's Fastest Man." He explained he owns the nickname because of his Olympic gold medal performance.

"Because I hold the title of the Olympics," Lyles said. "You have the world record that’s the fastest man alive."

According to ESPN, Noah Lyles coined himself as the "World's Fastest Man" after winning the 100-meter world championship in Budapest, Hungary, in 2023.

The Florida native has been one of the most popular athletes in the Olympic Village due to his previous comments about NBA basketball players.

Lyles once called out the NBA for deeming themselves "World Champions" despite going head-to-head against teams based in the United States.

“You know the thing that hurts me the most?” Lyles said . “I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have ‘world champion’ on their heads.... World champion of what? The United States?"

Despite the pressure he faced heading into the 100-meter final, with the United States men's basketball team watching the race in the stands and millions of fans shining a light on his previous comments, Noah Lyles delivered.
