If you’ve been anywhere near social media in the last few months, you’ll likely have heard of quiet luxury; the must-have trend dominating our homes this year. The aesthetic is all about subtlety – 'quiet luxury’ indicates a desirable home that looks expensive but in an understated way.

Jennifer Aniston's bedroom in her Bel Air home, designed by Stephen Shadley, embodies this aesthetic. The home doesn’t scream ‘I have money’ in obvious, showy ways, but gives it away in smaller details. It’s top-quality craftsmanship, timeless design choices and smaller details that point to a rich and interesting life, such as unique artwork, antique furniture, and coordination but not matchy-matchy interiors.

The key to being understated is to avoid it looking over-decorated. It’s a bit like when a lady wears a very simple dress but it looks amazing. It can be difficult to achieve, but when you get there its success is felt. Old-fashioned materials like bronze, linen and glass should be central to this look.

On this second collaboration with Aniston – after the process of designing her previous home in Beverly Hills – Shadley explained that the Friends favorite wanted to take a more confident, casually elegant approach to decorating this time round, he says in his book Designing Hollywood Homes: Movie Houses .

She knew how she wanted to live: with a muted quiet luxury color palette , classic furnishings, plush textiles, and a decadence that can only be described as sophisticated yet sexy. The final result is anything but contrived.

In a world where everything at times feels so fast-paced and chaotic, more and more people are turning to quieter color palettes to create a sense of calm and stillness. Aniston is no exception.

The power of a neutral color palette to add warmth and elegance to a room should not be underestimated. When decorating with neutrals a key element is the importance of layering with textures and tonal shades.

'I love the stillness and poise that you create when you have a neutral palette in a bedroom, especially if you wish to replicate the quiet luxury aesthetic', says interior designer Tamsin Johnson. ' But this choice doesn’t have to mean boring: you can create an interesting and exciting space by layering different tones, such as off-whites and beige, then introducing a range of caramels and even accents of gold and chrome.'

The quiet luxury bedroom is all about comfort and coziness, but never boring. Aniston's space soothes the soul.

    Designing Hollywood Homes: Movie Houses

I read very few coffee table books from cover to cover, but Stephen Shadley's Designing Hollywood Homes: Movie Houses is one of them. The intricacies and intimate details of the design process are laid bare. True fans of Diane Keaton, Jennifer Aniston, Ryan Murphy, Robert Altman, and Matthew Modine need a copy in their repertoire.
