Former New York Times reporter Tatiana Schlossberg said that she had “no idea” that her relative Robert Kennedy Jr. was “responsible” for the bear cub abandoned in Central Park, despite having originally reported on the incident for the newspaper.

RFK Jr. admitted in a video posted to social media on Sunday that he was responsible for staging the scene of a dead cub in New York ten years ago after he picked up the bear he said a woman hit with her van. The presidential candidate said he was only now admitting the truth because the New Yorker was preparing to publish an article, which it did on Monday.

At the time the mystery of the bear cub was a national news story first published in 2014 by Schlossberg in the New York Times after she joined the publication as an intern that same year.

Schlossberg, who is the granddaughter of former President John F. Kennedy , is therefore the daughter of RFK Jr.’s cousin.

Speaking to the New York Times on RFK Jr.’s revelation and admission, the journalist issued a short statement to deny knowledge : “Like law enforcement, I had no idea who was responsible for this when I wrote the story.”
