U.S. Sprinter Noah Lyles Breaks Silence On Staredown Fail That Led To Loss

U.S. sprinter Noah Lyles stole the show on Sunday after he bagged the gold in the 100m final of the Paris Olympics. This was his first-ever gold medal in the Summer Games after winning bronze in the 200m event in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Lyles' outing nearly ended in disaster, though, after the enigmatic track star lost out in the preliminary race earlier in the day to long-time rival Oblique Seville of Jamaica. Lyles ended up losing the semifinal after staring down Seville right before they crossed the finish line.
Lyles' showboating got the better of him in the preliminary race as he ended up finishing second behind Seville. Lyles clocked in with a final time of 9.83, which was just 0.02 seconds behind Seville's time.
Lyles himself admitted that he committed a near-fatal error in the preliminary race -- one that he vowed to learn from.
"These are like the hardest fought medals I've ever had to do," Lyles said after winning gold in the final race. "I came out here in the first round and I underestimated it . And I said, never again.
"I'm gonna come out here with the intention to win every round. Even though I didn't get the win in the semis, all that matters is the last one."
Lyles lived up to his promise later in the day as he finished with a time of 9.784 seconds -- a personal best -- in the final to bag the gold.
For what it's worth, Lyles defeated second-place finisher Jamaica's Kishane Thompson by just 0.005 seconds. The American made sure not to taunt his opponent in this one.
