North Korea has stoked international alarm by deploying a new array of fearsome weapons along its border . The hermit kingdom's border troops were equipped with 250 newly manufactured tactical ballistic missile launchers over the weekend, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

KCNA praised the move as evidence of the "indefinite development of the national defence capabilities" and the ongoing drive to "modernise" the North Korean military. The supreme leader Kim Jong-un was present at the distribution ceremony, having commanded the creation of this novel tactical ballistic missile system to enhance the nation's offensive prowess.

Kim has declared that bolstering military strength is his paramount objective , reports the Express . According to KCNA: "Kim Jong Un noted that holding a ceremony of transferring the new-type weapon system... is a manifestation of the firm will of our Party to push ahead with the bolstering of defence capabilities, the fundamental guarantee for safeguarding the people and sovereignty, without stopping in any circumstances, and is the invariable principled stand maintained by us in the state building.

"Kim Jong Un expressed the belief that the latest weapons, another firm stepping stone for injecting vitality into the name and flag of the DPRK and remarkably enhancing its prestige, would demonstrate their might as a powerful treasured sword for defending the sovereignty of the country and peace."

Kim's nuclear programme has raised alarm bells as he shows a clear intention to station battlefield nuclear weapons along the North's border with South Korea. He has also given his military the green light to launch preemptive nuclear strikes if they believe their leadership is under threat.

Pyongyang is increasing its arsenal of mobile short-range weapons designed to overpower missile defences in South Korea, while also developing intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at reaching the US mainland.

Kim's escalating weapons tests and threats are largely viewed as an attempt to pressure the United States into recognising North Korea as a nuclear power and to lift US-led sanctions imposed over its nuclear program. Experts suggest that North Korea could also aim to heighten tensions during a US election year.

In recent months, the North has unveiled a new missile named the Hwasong-11, which analysts say can travel up to 62 miles. If stationed in frontline areas, these missiles could potentially cover vast areas of South Korea's greater capital area, home to about half of the country's 51 million population.
