Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has offered a positive hint about his future at Anfield after taking to Instagram following his first day back for pre-season at the AXA Training Centre.

Earlier this summer, a deal for Gomez to move to Newcastle United for $58m (£45m/€53m) was agreed in principle. That was part of a transfer agreement that would have seen England winger Anthony Gordon move in the opposite direction for $96m (£75m/€88m) .

Liverpool.com understands, however, that while that was the case, the Reds are in no rush to move the 27-year-old on . They were willing to let the player go in specific circumstances and The Times has since reported that the player is not pushing for an exit, which makes him staying seem very likely.

Taking to Instagram , the player himself has posted the words "Szn 10" after returning for pre-season training yesterday. The longest-serving player left at Liverpool and the only one who was at the club when Jurgen Klopp arrived, it doesn't sound like he is planning to be playing soccer elsewhere next year and could make it a decade on Merseyside having arrived from Charlton under Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool.com says: Gomez is not going to be the first choice alongside Virgil van Dijk at center-back every week any time soon given Jarell Quansah's progress and how good Ibrahima Konate can be, but he got loads of minutes last season in other positions and proved to be invaluable. Left and right-back is not where he wants to play, but he can certainly do both roles well.

Gomez could sign for a mid-table Premier League club (or even one pushing for the Champions League places) and play every week but that would be a big step down. In our opinion, it is better to be a part of the new Arne Slot era than playing week in week out for, say, Spurs, West Ham United or Aston Villa.
