Over the weekend, some of the biggest names in country music flocked to the George, Washington for the 2024 Watershed Festival. The lineup included Luke Bryan, Riley Green, Cole Swindell, Zach Top, Terri Clark, and many more. Like most festivals, Watershed produced some one-of-kind moments and duets. For instance, Green invited Top to join him for a rendition of the Toby Keith classic “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”

Top was the perfect pick for a surprise. For one, he grew up in Washington state. So, the “Sounds Like the Radio” singer was in front of a home-state crowd. At the same time, his latest album is a deep dive into the ‘90s country sound. As a result, the ‘90s banger is well within his wheelhouse.

The Washington native didn’t just sound great performing TK’s debut single alongside Green. He also looked the part. He sported a cowboy hat and striped pearl snap shirt that would have been right at home on an album cover in 1994. To match the cowboy energy, Green swapped his usual ball cap for a cowboy hat early in the performance.

Riley Green and Zach Top Breathe New Life into a ‘90s Classic

Zach Top and Riley Green picked the perfect song to honor Toby Keith during their Watershed Festival duet.

Keith wrote the song and released it as the lead single from his self-titled debut album. It impacted country radio in February of 1993, introducing the Oklahoma native to the world. Before long, it topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, giving Big Dog Daddy the first of many No. 1 hits. More than that, it stayed at the top of the chart, giving him his first multi-week No. 1s.

More than a chart-topping hit, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” became one of Keith’s signature songs. It also became a staple at Oklahoma State University sporting events. Interestingly, TK was a lifelong fan of the University of Oklahoma Sooners, in-state rivals of the OSU Cowboys. OU gave him a posthumous honorary degree earlier this year.
