Anytime you see one of those stories about some eight or nine-year-old dog that gets adopted who's had a rough life, it just kills you. And so, to some degree, that's kind of what we've been thinking."

Adopting another dog is a big decision that requires careful consideration and thought before you go and visit your local animal shelter or humane society.

Does your current dog get along well with other dogs ? Has he spent time with another dog and seemed curious and friendly? If your dog is older, or has issues that affect an elderly dog, they may not adapt well to a new, hyper puppy. Similarly, a very young pup might overwhelm a senior dog .

Let's face it, owning a dog can be expensive, and you need to consider if you can afford the food, vet visits, grooming and boarding costs of another dog if you ever have to go out of town.

Dogs require exercise and attention, do you have the time available to provide an additional dog with playtime and walks?

Do you have enough room in your home and in your yard for an additional dog. Two large dogs may not do well in a very small apartment.

Adopt from reputable shelters or rescue organizations that provide accurate information about the dog’s health and behavior and how they get along with other dogs. Some rescue organizations will let you foster a dog as a test run to see how they get along with other animals in your family.

If you do decide to adopt another dog for your family, please remember adopting a dog is a long-term commitment that can last for many years. Be prepared for the responsibility
