Latest sighting at Cowboys' training camp raises the stakes at fiery position battle

The Dallas Cowboys have an already fiery position battle at wide receiver early on in training camp as Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Cropper, David Durden, and even Tyron Billy-Johnson have been turning heads at practice, raising questions about who will make it and which role will belong to whom?

The astute, die-hard fan might've noticed a name missing from the above list: Sixth-round rookie WR Ryan Flournoy out of Southeast Missouri State.

Well, that's because Flournoy had been out injured and had yet to put on pads at Oxnard, California... up until Monday.

That's why when Flournoy showed up to practice in pads for the first time today, the sighting alone made it feel like the stakes just went up for wide receivers fighting for a spot.

Flournoy returning to practice is huge for the rookie as at this point he needs the joint practices and preseason games to stand out and secure his spot on the team.

The Cowboys, who don't usually bet on small school players, clearly appreciate Flournoy's traits and while earning a spot on offense will be tough, he's somebody they want to develop while he contributes on special teams.

It's now catch-up season for the rookie who excels snatching the football out of the air while showing off a rare combo of size and speed. Right now, it's WR6 or bust for him as the top five slots are pretty much locked up with the following players:

    1. CeeDee Lamb
    2. Brandin Cooks
    3. Jalen Tolbert
    4. KaVontae Turpin
    5. Jalen Brooks
    6. ???

As an actual draft pick from this year's class , Flournoy carries a significant advantage. But he'll have to back it up on the field because the Cowboys have legit receivers worthy of a roster spot. It's also impossible to rule out the team pulling off some creative roster maneuvers to stash him as an injured player without risking him in waivers.
