Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is dealing with an injury to his plantar fascia which could throw a major wrench into the team’s plans for 2024.

While it’s not a severe injury in terms of there being any serious structural damage, it could serve as a nuisance to Herbert all season long.

Herbert will be resting for the next couple of weeks as the Chargers gear up for the regular season, and offensive coordinator Greg Roman sent a strong message to the offense knowing that the club’s signal-caller will be sidelined.

“The rest of the offense has to be on point,” Roman said, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “Then, Justin’s got to figure out some of the chemistry things while we get caught up.”

However, Roman thinks that things will be just fine.

“But no, I don’t see it as a problem. I really don’t,” he added. “These guys are instinctive guys, and it’s going to be great to get them all together, obviously. That’s always good. But that’s life in the NFL.”

Easton Stick remains Herbert’s primary backup in Los Angeles, so if Herbert is out for an extended period of time, Stick—who started the last four games of last season—will be under center.

Justin Herbert has a lot to prove for the Chargers

No one doubts Herbert’s physical gifts. He is one of the most talented passers in all of football. However, he hasn’t exactly won much yet.

Through four NFL seasons, Herbert has gone 30-32 as a starter and has led the Chargers to the playoffs just once. In that lone playoff game, Los Angeles blew a 27-point lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There are legitimate questions about whether or not Herbert has what it takes to lead a team to a Super Bowl, mainly from a leadership/mental perspective.

Herbert made the Pro Bowl in 2021 after throwing for 5,014 yards, so we know he can sling it. But can he take that next step?

Plus, the University of Oregon product has actually regressed over the last couple of seasons.

Further complicating matters for Herbert is that the Chargers subtracted all of his top weapons this offseason, trading Keenan Allen, releasing Mike Williams and watching Austin Ekeler and Gerald Everett walk via free agency.

On top of all of that, Herbert is now dealing with an annoying injury.

We’ll see if Justin Herbert can overcome adversity in 2024.
