Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour has shared some details about the title track from his forthcoming solo album, Luck and Strange, which will be released on September 6. As previously reported, the song incorporates a keyboard part by late Pink Floyd co-founder Rick Wright recorded in 2007.

Gilmour discusses the track in a new video preview for the album posted on his social media pages. The clip begins with him playing a guitar riff from “Luck and Strange.”

“‘Luck and Strange’ is the title of a song. It comes from a jam that we did in 2007, while Rick Wright was still alive,” Gilmour explains. “[Then] I wrote choruses and bridges for it, and then [my wife and longtime lyricist] Polly [Samson] wrote these great words. From the first second you hear Rick playing his electric piano, you just know that there’s something absolutely individual about what he does that no one else does or could do.”

According to the Luck and Strange press release, the jam featuring Wright was recorded in a barn on Gilmour’s property. The new video clip features footage of Wright playing keyboards in Gilmour’s barn. It’s not clear if the footage actually captures Rick playing the part used on “Luck and Strange.”

Wright died of lung cancer in September 2008 at the age of 65.

Luck and Strange is available for pre-order now in a variety of formats and configuration. It features eight new original songs, plus a cover of dream-pop duo The Montgolfier Brothers’ 1999 tune “Between Two Points.”

Gilmour’s daughter, Romany, is featured on lead vocals and harp on “Between Two Points,” and she also sang harmony on the song “The Piper’s Call.” David’s son Charlie contributed lyrics to the album’s final track, “Scattered.”

    Gilmour’s 2024 Tour Plans

Gilmour will launch a 2024 tour in support of Luck and Strange with a six-concert engagement in Rome spanning from September 27 to October 3. He also has six concerts scheduled at the Royal Albert Hall in London from October 9 to October 15.

Gilmour also has dates lined up in the Los Angeles area and New York City.
