Team USA Golf sensation Nelly Korda pokes fun at her own family over little-known Olympics streak

Nelly Korda is making her second Olympic appearance at the Paris Games this week, and the world No. 1 golfer has been quick to remind the male side of the Korda family of her achievements.

Having won the gold medal in the women's gold event in Tokyo three years ago, Korda will defend her crown at Le Golf National this week. When winning in Japan in 2021, the LPGA Tour star did so alongside her sister Jessica, as they joined their mom Regina in becoming Olympians.

Tennis star Regina represented her native Czechoslovakia at the 1988 Olympic Games. The Korda family are renowned for their remarkable sporting ability, with Regina married to former world No. 2 tennis player Petr Korda.

Of their three children, Nelly and Jessica are of course two of the most talented golfers on the planet, whilst their son Sebastian opted to follow in his parent's footsteps and become an ATP Tour tennis star. Three members of the family in Regina, Nelly, and Jessica have gone on to become Olympians.

And they make no mistake of sharing a gentle reminder of that to the male side of the family. "We always make fun of the boys because we say that the girls in the Korda family are the only ones that are the Olympians and the boys are not," the world No. 1 joked in her pre-tournament press conference.

"My dad and my brother may or may not be. So we have that above them in the family." Korda got her hands on the gold medal in Tokyo three years ago after shooting 15-under-par across her four rounds, leaving her three shots clear of the silver medalist, Aditi Ashok.

Heading into this year's event the U.S. athlete is the favorite to defend her crown having announced herself as a dominant figure on the LPGA Tour in 2024. Korda has won six events so far this season, including five in a row between March and April, which included her second major crown at the Chevron Championship.

Ahead of her Olympic title defense, Korda has taken a four-week break from competition, and the world No. 1 is hoping this time away can aid her bid to become a back-to-back gold medal winner. Korda added: "My parents have always said, it's very important to put your head down, grind, go to the gym but it's also important to recharge your battery because sometimes.

"With all the obligations that you maybe have off the golf course, and then all the emotions that you feel on the golf course that you go through, all the adrenaline, it tears at you a little bit. So it's good to kind of step away and to recharge your batteries and to come back a little bit more fresh."
