Why FC Barcelona's 2024/25 Home Jerseys Have Two Different Versions?

FC Barcelona have started their preparations for the 2024-25 season, the first under new manager Hansi Flick, by playing a series of friendlies in the United States.

The Spanish giants have played these games wearing their striking new home jersey for the 2024-25 season. The design is inspired by the club's first-ever shirt from their founding in 1899, featuring a half-and-half pattern in the team's "blaugrana" colors to commemorate their 125th anniversary.

Barcelona unveiled their home shirts for the 2024-25 season last July 18 with a promotional video featuring club legends Ronaldinho and Andrés Iniesta, along with current players Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, Gavi, Robert Lewandowski, Ronald Araújo, Pau Cubarsí, and many others.

Upon seeing the video, fans noticed that there is a noticeable difference between the design of the new home shirt worn by the players on the pitch and those sold by their official kit supplier Nike in the club store and other retailers.

Design leaks of the next season’s kits for major European clubs typically surface months before their official unveiling, and they are usually accurate since the design process takes months to a year, with leaks occurring along the way.

This time, there was a stark contrast between the leaked designs of Barcelona's 2024-25 jersey and the final version revealed.

Spotify has different logos in Barcelona's 2024-25 home jerseys

While the design of the actual shirt remains the same from the leaks, the main sponsor's logo, Spotify, is notably different.

Since the music streaming platform became Barcelona's main shirt sponsor in the 2022-23 season, they have typically included their wordmark alongside their emblem on the jerseys, and prior leaks showed no changes for the upcoming season.

To the surprise of many, Barcelona's 2024-25 jerseys on the promotional video feature only the round Spotify emblem, omitting the wordmark found on the player-worn versions. Even more confusing, the fan versions of the shirt available for sale still include the Spotify wordmark.

This discrepancy is due to Spotify making a slight change to their company logo in May 2024, updating the font of the wordmark. They wanted Barcelona to feature the new logo for the 2024-25 jerseys, but by the time the change was made, Nike had already started printing the new shirts with the old wordmark.

Likely due to branding reasons, Spotify may have decided to omit the old wordmark from Barcelona's upcoming on-pitch kits, opting instead for an emblem-only design.

Barcelona’s away and third kits for the 2024-25 season have yet to be officially unveiled, but leaks have shown a wordmark on the Spotify logo. It remains to be seen which version will be officially released.

Barcelona's 2024-25 home jerseys are selling like hotcakes

Barcelona’s 2024-25 home jerseys have been well received by fans so far, despite the discrepancy in the main shirt sponsor’s design.

Within the first three hours of sales, as many shirts were purchased as on the entire first day of sale last year, according to Mundo Deportivo .

The internal figures from the club also confirmed that this year marked the highest first-day home jersey sales in FC Barcelona's history.

Rising young star Lamine Yamal's number 19 shirt garnered the highest sales during that day, with the club's official store running out of the letter "A" for the name shirt printing at the back due to the exceptional demand.
