Liverpool is reportedly poised to make its first summer signing after returning from their U.S. tour.

Arne Slot, the new manager, hasn't welcomed any new faces at Anfield since taking over from Jurgen Klopp earlier this summer. Despite an unbeaten tour, there's a consensus that fresh blood is required.

The Reds' transfer gurus appear to be focusing on bolstering the midfield, with reports suggesting they're nearing the acquisition of a specialist No. 6 from outside the Premier League .

Several players fitting this profile have been linked with a switch to Merseyside. Here, we take a look at six potential candidates who could become Slot's inaugural signing as Liverpool manager.

    Manuel Ugarte

The Uruguayan only made the move to PSG last summer but already seems set for an exit from Parc des Princes. He fell out of favor under Luis Enrique as the season wore on, though he still played a part in PSG's domestic treble victory.

Manchester United were strongly rumoured to be interested in the 23-year-old. However, it appears the Red Devils have now dropped their pursuit, likely indicating a rival team has taken the lead.

Ugarte, with 22 caps for Uruguay, is viewed as a tenacious defensive midfielder, leading the Ligue 1 charts for most tackles made last term, despite only featuring 25 times.

    Morten Frendrup

The Danish player was a key figure in Genoa's promotion from Serie B in 2023, establishing himself as a crucial part of the team in Italy's top league last season, known for his exceptional ball-winning skills.

Despite being a regular in Denmark's junior teams, Frendrup has yet to earn a senior cap. His recent contract renewal in February could potentially increase his price tag.

    Ederson

Liverpool fans, don't get too excited - we're not talking about Manchester City's goalkeeper. This Ederson has been turning heads at Atalanta since he joined the Serie A club two years ago, playing a pivotal role in their Europa League triumph last season.

His stellar performances at club level earned him a call-up to the Brazilian national team, where he featured in this summer's Copa America. At 25, he's slightly older than the other two options.

    Alan Varela

Varela, who only moved to Porto last summer, has quickly made a name for himself as a promising midfield talent. He played a significant role in Porto's Taca de Portugal victory last season, after previously winning the Argentine Primera Division with Boca Juniors.

At just 23, Varela seems to have a bright future ahead. However, like Frendrup, his recent move to Portugal could make him a costly acquisition.

    Joey Veerman

It wouldn't be surprising if Liverpool's first signing under Slot is a Dutch player. Joey Veerman, who played a key role in PSV Eindhoven's Eredivisie title win last season, could be a prime target.

Slot, having managed Feyenoord, would be familiar with Veerman's abilities. The midfielder has also secured a regular spot in the Netherlands national team and was part of their Euro 2024 squad.

    Joshua Kimmich

The most seasoned player on this list, Kimmich would be a sensational acquisition for Liverpool. He's been instrumental in Bayern Munich's trophy-laden run.

However, he only has one year left on his contract at the Allianz Arena. Kimmich's vast experience would be invaluable to Liverpool, and the Reds might attempt to disrupt Bayern's ongoing contract negotiations.
