Team USA 's artistic swimmers are going viral for their performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
On Monday, Aug. 5, the group took to the water to show off their technical routine as the first of five competitions slated for this year's Olympic games. While all the moves required intense breathwork and mastery, one skill is being championed as more than "impressive" by viewers watching from across the globe.
The sequence saw a group of eight Olympians as they made their way to the center of the pool to, get this, moonwalk underwater.
"Team USA moonwalked upside down, underwater," one astonished fan shared via X (formerly Twitter) alongside a clip of the now-viral moment. "I’ll never understand how they train for this."
"Insane," another simply wrote , while someone else dubbed the video "unbelievable."
"Can't lie," a fourth admitted , "This is pretty hard."
Someone else commented on just how "impressive" it was that they could hold their breath for so long "while moving vigorously" in the water.
"Insane body control. Breathing technique is amazing as well," a different user cheered .
Even users on Reddit, arguably the hardest social media platform to faze, were inspired by the routine.
"Regular moonwalking is hard, I feel like they're just laughing at me for being shit," one fan quipped.
"Doing the moon walk upside down in water is insane, I would have literally drowned 10 seconds in," another joked , later adding that their interest had gotten the best of them so they "found there [sic] training sequence" and linked it for other curious minds.
"These women are simply amazing. The training & discipline to execute this is unimaginable," a third gushed . "Hours upon hours in the pool, upside down in perfect synchronization- it’s really breathtaking. And here I am, eating a sandwich and noticing the 11 times I personally would have drowned- just in this clip. Even entering the water would have been sketchy for me."
"This is one of those sports that I’m A) utterly impressed and fascinated while watching, and 2) baffled that it’s still being performed," someone else shared .
Team USA is only getting started, too. The pros are set to compete with their free routine on Tuesday and a team acrobatic routine on Wednesday before heading back to the pool on Friday, Aug. 9, to perform duet technical routines. The artistic swimming schedule will wrap up with a final free duet competition on Saturday, Aug. 10.
