Samsung tipped to bring mega free AI upgrade to its cheaper Galaxy phones next – but some top features may be missing

SAMSUNG is reportedly plotting to roll out its top AI features that enhance photos and more to cheaper Galaxy smartphones next.

Galaxy AI was launched at the start of the year with a load of new tools, such as the ability to manipulate snaps, translate live phone calls and even write messages for you.

They were initially introduced for the Galaxy S24 line and were also included on the recent Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 with some further enhancements.

Samsung has committed to roll the features out where possible to older smartphones but only for its premium products.

But Samsung enthusiast website SamMobile claims the South Korean tech giant is now planning to bring Galaxy AI to some of its mid-range handsets for the first time.

It's not clear which models may be eligible, but sources tell the publication they will appear on the Galaxy A line.

The most recent being the Galaxy A35 and the Galaxy A55 which were only launched a few months ago.

However, if the report is true it's unlikely any of their budget-friendly phones will receive all of Samsung's top AI features.

That's because a lot of the AI tools rely on greater processing systems on the inside to pull them off.

As the Galaxy A series smartphones pack a cheaper and less powerful chip, they won't be able to fulfil all that Galaxy AI has to offer.

Until it's officially announced by Samsung, we don't have a clear idea of where the line may be drawn.

But we may not have long to wait as it's claimed that the upgrades will appear in the upcoming One UI 6.1.1 update that's expected to appear on mid-range phones this month or next.

BATTLE FOR AI

In a recent interview with The Sun, Samsung's UK boss appeared unfazed by AI plans of its closest rival, Apple.

The iPhone maker revealed Apple Intelligence in June after signing a deal with ChatGPT creator OpenAI.

"Can they [Apple] compete with us I would say?" James Kitto, Samsung’s UK and Ireland head of mobile told The Sun exclusively.

"We’ve built our own models, our own language models that run specifically on-device but then we’re also working with great partners like Google and we open the door to many others when they’ve got the right kind of solutions that will deliver something tangible to the customer.

"I think what we’ve proven there is you can’t home grow AI on your own and I think other players who will eventually come to market with AI have also discovered that actually this is a new open era that we’re in.

"We’ve always been in it and I think others are finding that they’re going to have to start opening up their doors to participate in what is such a fast paced industry."
