9 Liverpool players who could leave as Jamie Carragher demands summer clearout

Liverpool is hoping to be busy in the transfer market before the August 30 deadline but that is not limited to incomings. In fact, it will be just as important to free up space in the squad and let some players move out on loan to gain senior experience.

"I think Liverpool's squad is really big," Reds legend Jamie Carragher told Sport Bible this week. "You can't just buy players, you've got to move players on. I know people think we move players on because we've got to get money in but there are only so many players you can have in a squad.

"We have got a big squad. It doesn't feel like it because there were so many injuries. But if we sort our injury record out this season, there are players who will have to leave, probably four or five because there are just too many players."

Who, then, could move on in the next couple of weeks? Sepp van den Berg has drawn interest from various clubs after an impressive spell with Mainz last season. PSV is keen on him but unwilling to meet the $26m (£20m/€22m) asking price.

Bobby Clark was the subject of a $7.6m (£6.0m/€7.0m) bid from Red Bull Salzburg last week and the attacking midfield talent could depart before the end of the summer. A loan would be ideal but that will only happen once he recovers from injury.

Fabio Carvalho is another who has been the subject of an offer, but Liverpool values him substantially above the $19m (£15m/€17m) fee suggested by Southampton. Leicester City is another suitor, according to Fabrizio Romano . Wataru Endo is another who Liverpool has rejected an offer for. Marseille has since moved on to other signings but was keen on the Japan captain at $15m (£12m/€14m).

Owen Beck, the Daily Record has reported, is of interest to both Celtic and Rangers but Liverpool would like a permanent move rather than a loan for the 20-year-old. Tyler Morton , meanwhile, has a variety of interested parties all across Europe; the decision for him will be whether he can see a pathway to regular minutes having impressed on loan in the Championship.

Ben Doak and Kaide Gordon should be looking to get out on loan to get senior minutes under their belts. Doak is being courted by Premier League clubs including Brentford, the Daily Express has reported. Nat Phillips, meanwhile, should get a permanent exit with his future clearly lying elsewhere.

In an ideal world, Liverpool will be able to bring in a couple of new faces to freshen things up and add quality in key areas of the team. In reality, though, the biggest volume of work might come in negotiating some exits.
