No end in sight for Haason Reddick holdout from New York Jets training camp

It was another day in Florham Park and another New York Jets training camp practice without edge rusher Haason Reddick.

With the preseason opener set for Saturday against the Washington Commanders , the Jets hosted Practice No. 11 at the team facility on Tuesday as Reddick remained absent due to a contract dispute. Reddick, who is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl selections, has yet to report for training camp after foregoing both voluntary OTAs and mandatory June minicamp.

"I still have nothing," said fourth-year head coach Robert Saleh when asked for an update on Reddick's status following Monday's practice.

Saleh, who spent four seasons as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator prior to landing the Jets head job in 2021, seemed unsure of what to expect as the situation further develops.

"I'm not surprised by anything in the League anymore," quipped Saleh.

The entire situation surrounding Reddick is likely classified as surprising by some. The Jets traded away a draft asset to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for the pass rusher in late March. Meanwhile, Jets homegrown defensive end Bryce Huff reached a contract agreement with Philadelphia in free agency.

Set to turn 30 years old on September 22, Reddick reportedly gave the organization any indication that he had holdout intentions. Per the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the New Jersey native is subject to an irrevocable $50K daily fine .

The Jets have not publicly objected to renegotiating Reddick's contract, which is due to expire following the 2024 season is valued at $14.1 million, but the team has said it will not hold talks with any player not present at camp.

Seemingly dug in for the long haul with two weeks of training camp already in the books, Reddick may choose to take his protest up until the start of the regular season. If he can absorb the financial hit, there's no reason to subject his body to the rigors of training camp.

When Reddick finally shows up, however, Saleh isn't concerned about acclimation time.

"Players come and go all the time, unfortunately. You're always having to make adjustments on the fly, but I'll say it again, it's not the easiest position but the last position that I'm worried about getting caught up to speed," said Saleh.
