Kevin Hart — known for his comedic roles, a few dramatic turns and gut-busting stand-up — has now taken on the starring role of reliable mercenary, Roland, in the film adaptation of the video game, Borderlands .

Directed by Eli Roth, Hart stars alongside Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis, as they band together with one challenge in mind.

According to the synopsis, “Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora: the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez): the universe’s most powerful S.O.B.” To do so, “Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits — Roland (Hart): a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt): a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu): Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis): the oddball scientist who’s seen it all and Claptrap (Black): a wiseass robot.”

Just think Guardians of the Galaxy mixed with a little Star Wars.

Speaking of landing a leading role in an exciting science fiction film — much different from his other onscreen projects — Hart told VIBE just how much he’s similar to his Roland character in real life.

“There’s a nice little portion,” he began. “I am very good in the weapon space of life. I can operate and handle myself in that region very well. I am a fit guy. If it came down to any type of fighting atmosphere, I can fend for myself pretty well. And when it’s time to be a hard a**, I can do a really good job of it. And I’m also a great delegator.”

Hart’s been in the movie business for well over two decades, dating back to starring as a rookie burglar in the 2002 film Paper Soldiers . Fast forward, and he’s taken on much larger roles in films such as Ride Along , Central Intelligence , The Upside , Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle , Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw , The Man From Toronto , Lift and many more.

Kevin Hart is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on October 10, 2016 in Hollywood, California.

After 22 years in the biz, one might think the 45-year-old father-of-four would lose his spark for acting. However, for Hart, filming Borderlands only continued to assure him that he’s “still having a good time” doing what he’s been blessed to do on a large scale.

“I think the day that it feels like work or becomes work, is the day that I need to think about change,” he expressed. “Not that working in an environment where you feel like you’re working is bad — because it’s not — but for me to operate at this high level of energy on a consistent basis, it’s based off of excitement.”

“That being said, I just don’t want that to change,” he declared.

To get into character for the role of Roland, Hart admitted that he did play the best-selling video game at first just to familiarize himself with the world of Pandora.

“I just wanted to make myself familiar with what the world was, and take a deeper dive and see what it is that the fan base is so crazy about,” he explained. “I mean 50 million plus-whatever users have touched this game, so it’s a big thing to not understand. You owe it to the world of gamers , right? The people that have committed to this thing over the course of time, you owe it to them just to be able to say that you did touch the game, you touched the joysticks, you played.”

He added, “And after doing that —going back to the world of acting — now you at least have something that you can table, something that you can pull from. So to answer your question, yes. Yes, I did.”

Not to be confused with the world of Pandora in the beloved Avatar franchise, Borderlands’ setting is in “a chaotic world plagued by corporate greed, convict labor, private armies, and deadly monsters due to unchecked colonization,” according to Collider .

When humorously asked what he would name his own planet, the award-winning actor mindlessly responded, “Harter.”

“It’s where everybody lives that’s happy. No [negativity], no gossip, no bad energy, all just happy. That’s it,” he said.
