The New England Patriots are in an interesting spot that they have not seen themselves in for a long time.

In the quarterback room on one hand, there is a presumed started and veteran in Jacoby Brissett who the team knows is capable. On the other is a highly drafted rookie in Drake Maye who likely will need some more seasoning before he's ready to go and able to play at the high level required in the National Football League .

During a radio appearance with Sirius XM NFL , head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about the room as a whole and gave some insight and praise to each guy.

"I will say that Jacoby has done a great job at leading that entire room. Just a veteran player, that really...he's able to control his ego, he knows that [Maye] and Joe Milton and [Bailey] Zappe are all competing to be on this team, but in saying that, he's an open book for all of these guys whether it's on the field or in the classroom...Sometimes it's better to hear it from one of your teammates than a coach," Mayo said , adding that Drake Maye is as hungry as anyone to play. "Going back to Drake, this guy is ultra, ultra competitive. That was one of the traits that I was like 'Man, this guy is gonna be good.' He's always here all day and he's getting better."

In all likelihood, Brissett will begin the season as the starter, and as a competitor, this is what he wants to do. But the fact that he has taken on a mentor type role for the room as a whole speaks volumes about the kind of player and person that he is.

As for Maye, he will be on the field sooner rather than later.
