The United States women's national team advanced to the Olympic gold medal game with a thrilling semifinal victory over Germany on Tuesday.

American soccer star Sophia Smith got the job done in extra time, scoring the lone goal of the contest in the 95th minute off an assist from teammate Mallory Swanson.

USWNT legend Alex Morgan was not selected for this year's Olympic team, but the two-time Olympic medalist is still thrilled for her fellow countrywomen.

Morgan was specifically excited for her San Diego Wave teammate Naomi Girma, whose world-class performance at the center back position helped stymie the German offense throughout the entire semifinal.

"There are 8.2 billion people on Earth. But only one Naomi Girma," the USWNT wrote on X.

    "LFG!!!!!" Morgan replied.

"Look, she's the best defender I've ever seen," USWNT coach Emma Hayes said after the game. "I've never seen a player as good as her at the back. She's got everything, poise, composure, she can defend, she anticipates, she leads. [She's] unbelievable."

With Girma at the heart of the American defense, the USWNT will face off against Brazil in the gold medal game on Saturday, August 10.
