Chargers make move at QB that doesn't come close to fixing team's issues

After working out with the team on Monday, journeyman quarterback Luis Perez has signed a contract with the Los Angeles Chargers .

Following the news of a plantar fascia injury for Justin Herbert last week, the Chargers were encouraged to look at the quarterback market. Ryan Tannehill is still a free agent. Potential trades for a player such as Tyler Huntley or Taylor Heinicke are out there.

Instead, the team has settled on Perez, who has played his best football in the spring leagues.

Luis Perez was MVP of 2023 XFL Championship Game

Perez is an experienced quarterback who can certainly help guide the Chargers through the rest of training camp and preseason games. But with three other quarterbacks already on the roster, is that the kind of move the team should be making?

The Chargers expect Herbert to be back for the start of the regular season. If for some reason he's not ready, or if his injury lingers , Easton Stick will be the guy the team turns to.

Perez, described as a journeyman above, is exactly that. Here are each of his stops after going undrafted in 2018:

    Los Angeles Rams
    Birmingham Iron (AAF)
    Philadelphia Eagles
    Detroit Lions
    Los Angeles Wildcats (XFL)
    New York Guardians (XFL)
    New Jersey Generals (USFL)
    Los Angeles Rams
    Vegas Vipers (XFL)
Arlington Renegades (XFL, won XFL championship game MVP)

    That is quite the resume.

Perez was born in San Diego and that could help endear him to some of the team's fans. It's a feel-good story and it's great to see Perez getting this opportunity to continue to chase his dreams. But it seems that the Chargers needed to make a bolder move because now instead of having three marginal quarterbacks, they have four.
