Dan Patrick: “Mike McDaniel, head coach of the Dolphins, and former star receiver with Yale... Although, I’m looking at the stats and I can’t find any stats from when you were a wide receiver at Yale!”
Mike McDaniel: “Well, you didn’t look up the blocking statistics. ‘Friendships Made’, I led the team in that!”
DP: “If you were to look at the player comp, like a wide receiver in the NFL that best resembles your wide receiver skills when you were at Yale and plays the way you played?”
McDaniel: “No one’s ever asked me that and I know exactly the answer... The antithesis of every receiver that is in a receiving corps of mine. I would body catch and get no YAC [yards after catch], and a lot of the things that I was incapable of doing drove my scouting as I became a professional coach. So quite literally; if they’re on our team, they don’t share commonalities with how I play. I knew which players I didn’t want, which was great.”
